Robust Design
Description
- Integrated Process Architecture - Systematic and repeatable approach to core business processes.
- Quality Function Deployment - Process used to capture and prioritize customer "wants" and "needs."
- Statistical Design Methods - Methodologies used to measure and improve products and processes focusing on variation rather than just the average.
- Risk Management - Systematic approach to quantifying and mitigating program and product risk factors.
- Design for Manufacturing and Assembly - Process designed to extract and prioritize the most creative ideas from a cross-functional work team.
- Cost as an Independent Variable - Method used to define the product offering based on the amount of funding the customer has available.
- Process Characterization - Software tool used to predict product cost, quality and assembly time based on key design characteristics.
- Design for Environment - A methodology to design out hazardous materials from our products and processes.
- Design of Experiments - Experimentation process aimed at extracting the maximum amount of information with the minimum number of experiments.
Objectives
This course is intended to provide an overview of some of the key tools and processes used in developing designs, which are robust. For the focus of this class, a robust design is one that; "Meets and/or exceeds the expectations of our customers with regards to cost, quality and cycle time despite the high variation in external and internal factors influencing our results. Overall, our robust designs must be repeatable, supportable, reliable and producible."
