Working With Data
Description
Data is an intrinsic part of all business life. We use it to produce and qualify products as well as to support our technical and business decisions. That leads to an expectation of fluent and accurate use of data. Unfortunately, there are many pitfalls such as precise formats, contractual obligations and conversion between multiple systems of units that can lead to problems and waste. With massive databases that reach across the whole supply chain, the penalties for errors, poorly defined accuracy and ambiguity are serious business issues. The course addresses these topics in a stimulating but effective way. It is highly interactive and demonstrates how to specify and manage data from 5 viewpoints:
- Customer expectations of our professional competency – why the outcomes are important (impact on products, time, cost, business)
- Characteristics of all measurements: numbers and units.
- Precision and accuracy, stability, effect of instruments, significance of results, management and representation of errors.
- Units, standards, their inter-relationships and pain-free conversion.
- Practical operations – standards and traceability, measurement ranges that require caution.
Intended Audience
- Anyone who has to specify or collect data to make decisions. This course is part of a series that leads to a JACMET Engineering Instrumentation Certificate.
